Mushroom cultivation. 19th-century artwork of a man with a shovel working in candle-light in a cave being used to grow mushrooms. The history of mushroom cultivation in caves dates back to at least the 17th century and King Louis XIV of France, who had mushrooms grown in special caves near Paris. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888.
