^BHuman fibrosis.^b Coloured scanning electron micrograph of liver tissue (red-brown) affected by fibrosis. This is a condition characterised by an overgrowth of bundles of connective tissue (pale yellow). Fibrous tissue may be formed as an exaggerated healing response to injury, infection or inflammation. Specialised structures within the liver are replaced by the fibrous tissue impairing the functions of this organ. The endothelial walls of capillaries (blue bottom left and centre right), also known as sinusoids in the liver, are altered and appear to be very thick. Magnification: x2130 at 6x7cm size.
