^BWitch^b ^Bdoctor^b ^Bcave^b ^Bpainting.^b A 20,000-year-old cave painting of a witch doctor dressed in a deerskin costume - the earliest known portrait of a doctor. This painting was made by Cro-Magnon humans - the ancestors of modern humans. Cro-Magnon Man spread into Europe 40,000 years ago, apparently driving the rival species Neanderthal Man to extinction. Ancient witch doctors often dressed fantastically, sometimes clothing themselves entirely in deer or bear skins complete with antlers or claws. This may have been done to gain the undivided attention of patients while performing a healing ritual. This cave painting was found in the Grotto of Trois Freres in Ariege in the French Pyrenees.
