Strangled stinkhorn fungus (Staheliomyces cinctus). This is the fruiting body of this fungus. It produces an unpleasant aroma from a slimy area called the gleba (brown). The strangled appearance of this area gives rise to the name of the fungus. Insects attracted to the gleba, such as a species of tropical bee, help spread the fungal spores. Photographed in lowland rainforest in Jama Coaque Reserve (Manabi Province), part of the Choco Biological Region, Ecuador.
