Zoetrope. Invented by an unknown Chinese inventor in 180, it is credited to William George Horner in 1834. This nineteenth century novelty item was a precursor to modern cinematography. Zoetropes use sequential images placed inside a drum with vertical slits cut in the side. When the drum is rotated and the images viewed through the slits it gives the impression of movement.
