Distant galaxies. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image showing a multitude of very faint and very distant galaxies discovered during a 'Deep Field' exposure. This view, equivalent to about 1/100th of the diameter of the full Moon, shows objects as faint as 30th magnitude (about 4 billion times fainter than the limit of human vision). Generally, bluer objects contain young stars or are relatively close, whilst redder objects are older and/or are further away. The bright white object near centre is a foreground star. The image was assembled from over 200 separate exposures, and approximates to true colour.
