Standing stones. View of Stone Age standing stones near Carnac in France. These megaliths, made from local granite, are thought to have been erected between 4500-2000 BC. In all there are over 3000 stones around Carnac, many in long parallel rows. The purpose of the alignments is unknown, but they may have been used for ritual processions.
