Virtual reality PHANToM device. Hand using a virtual reality device called a PHANToM haptic (touch) interface. With this device, the texture, temperature, shape, weight and elasticity of remote three-dimensional objects can be felt" with a pen-like stylus (as seen here) or thimble sensor worn on a fingertip. Much of the touch stimulus is achieved by the use of variable resisting forces against movements made by the user. This PHANToM operates within a 13x18x25 cm workspace and is sensitive to 0.03 millimetres. It may eventually be used in surgery, computer-aided design and home entertainment. Photographed at SensAble Technologies, Massachusetts, USA."
