Michael Foale, British-born astronaut, during preparation for his flight as International Space Station (ISS) expedition 8 mission commander. He is wearing a training version of an extravehicular mobility unit (EMU). Expedition 8 will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch site in Kazakhstan on 18th October 2003. In the wake of the Columbia space shuttle disaster, the astronauts will be taken to the ISS by a Soyuz TMA-3 spacecraft. Foale (born 1957) has previously made two visits, one a 4.5 month stay, to the Russian space station Mir, which was crashed in 2001. Photographed in 2002.
