Swollen Fallopian tubes. X-ray of the abdomen of a woman suffering from hydrosalpinx, the accumulation of fluid in the Fallopian tubes (oviducts, white, upper left and right). The oviducts run from the ovaries (not seen) to the uterus (upper to lower centre). Hydrosalpinx may occur when the open end of an oviduct, close to the ovary, becomes blocked. Alternatively, it may arise as a complication of an ovarian cyst. Surgical drainage and repair of the tubes is often required. A contrast medium, injected through the neck (cervix, located at bottom centre) of the uterus, highlights the woman's reproductive tract on this X-ray.
