MODEL RELEASED. Insulin injection. Teenage boy suffering from diabetes mellitus, gives himself an insulin injection in the leg. The boy is using a novopen to administer the insulin. The novopen is a pen-like device which meters out the correct dose of insulin from portable cartridges. Insulin is a hormone made in the pancreas which helps convert blood sugar to energy. Diabetes is the condition where too little insulin is made. The consequence of this is that the body uses fats as an alternative to sugar. This causes a massive ketone build-up leading to convulsions and coma. The treatment for diabetes is a strict diet and regular doses of insulin.
