Bowel operation scar. Midline abdominal scar following an operation to correct a twisted bowel. This is the portion of the wound running downwards from the navel. The wound was closed with metal staples. Adhesive strips (Steristrips, white) also help to hold the edges of the wound together. A twisted bowel arises when a loop of the intestines becomes twisted and tangled. This is possible because the intestines are partially mobile within the abdomen. There is the possibility that the blood vessels to the loop may be compressed and the blood flow cut off. This will cause tissue death (gangrene). Emergency surgery is required to correct the condition.
