Pancreas carcinoma. Light micrograph of a section through the pancreas revealing carcinoma. The cancerous cells have dark purple nuclei, and are invading the healthy tissue (pink) of the organ. Pancreatic cancer often causes no symptoms until it is very well established. At this stage, there may be vomiting, loss of appetite and pain in the upper abdomen. If the cancer is caught early, surgical removal, followed by a course of radiotherapy and anti-cancer drugs may provide a cure. However the cancer is usually so insidious as to go unnoticed until it is terminal. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
