Karl Christoph Vogt (1817-1895), German naturalist and geologist. Vogt worked on areas of zoology, geology and physiology. Between 1839 and 1845, he published books on amphibians, reptiles, molluscs and crustaceans. While working with Louis Agassiz, at Neuchatel, Switzerland, in 1842, he discovered apoptosis (programmed cell death). Vogt went on to hold professorships in zoology (Giessen, 1847) and geology (Geneva, 1852). He supported Darwin's theory of evolution, and gave a series of lectures on the history of the Earth and Man's place in creation. The lectures were published in English in 1864.
