Homer. Engraving of the Greek poet Homer, credited with the two major epics of Greek antiquity, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Nothing is known about Homer and many scholars question whether one person wrote both poems. Linguistic and historical evidence suggests that both works were written on Greek settlements on the west coast of Asia Minor sometime around the 6th century BC. The Iliad deals with the Trojan war between the Greeks and the inhabitants of Troy. The Odyssey tells of the travels of the Greek hero Odysseus as he returns home after the Trojan war. The Homeric Hymns, a series of poems praising the Greek gods, is also credited to Homer.
