Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness (1798-1868), Irish brewer, mayor and member of parliament. The third son of Arthur Guinness, who had founded the Guinness brewery. Benjamin's vision made the company into an international success. Taking sole control in 1825, he established agencies in England, the British colonies and America. This resulted in him being elected first Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1851. Although the richest man in Ireland, he was keen to preserve Dublin's heritage, spending ?160,000 of his own fortune to restore St. Patrick's Cathedral. Guinness also represented the city of Dublin in parliament as a Conservative from 1865 till his death.
