Roger Angel. Portrait of Roger Angel, American founder & director of the Steward Observatory Mir- ror Laboratory that makes large telescope mirrors. Angel pioneered a method of making large mirrors from a honeycomb of borosilicate glass which were light and fitted in small buildings. After moving to the University of Arizona, his team made an 8.4-metre mirror, larger than any previous one, for the Large Binocular Telescope in January 1997. He is the co-inventor (with Neville Woolf) of the optical system of the Terrestrial Planet Finder, a spaceborne telescope due for launch in 2010. Photographed in front of a prototype mirror for the Hubble Space Telescope's successor in 1997.
