Art forgery detection. Technician operating an infra-red scanner as it illuminates a section of a forged painting. This is a copy of a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). Once the whole of the painting has been scanned, the infra- red image produced may reveal previously hidden features of the painting, for example, underlying sketches or areas where the paint has been retouched. This work is being carried out at the Doerner Institute in Munich, Germany, which is headed by Dr Andreas Burmester. The Institute specializes in the detection of art forgeries by various imaging techniques and chemical analyses.
