Leaf hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of an unidentified leaf, which is covered in numerous hairs (trichomes). These unbranched multicellular hairs may have both a protective function against predators and serve to reduce evaporation from the leaf. Numerous small stomata or pores (orange) serve to exchange gases and water from the leaf surface. Magnification: x40 at 6x7cm size.
