Light micrograph of a benign 'microcyst' (centre oval) in female breast (mammary gland) tissue from a non pregnant woman. The micrograph shows an abnormally enlarged duct (part of a larger unit the lobule), surrounded by connective tissue (turquoise). Lobules are the milk-secreting areas of the breast, each consisting of an aggregate of branching ducts, called alveolar ducts. Alveolar cells (purple dots) in the walls of the ducts manufacture & secrete milk. It drains into the lactiferous ducts & flows on to the nipple. The white ovals are adipose (fat) tissue. Microcysts may enlarge to form cysts, a common benign condition in adult women. Mag: x50 at 35mm size.
