False-colour image of quasar Markarian 205 and a part of galaxy NGC 4319 (top) taken with the 2.2 m reflector at Mauna Kea Observatory. The quasar is only 1.5 arcmin away from the core of NGC 4319 and appears to be connected to it by a faint bridge. The two objects have very different redshifts, however, indicating that one is much further away than the other. Recent observations, such as this, show a non-circular quasar image, which is due to the presence of a companion galaxy. Its spectrum shows the same redshift as that of the quasar, so the redshifts must be cosmological. The bridge may be merely an artifact of the merged images.
