MODEL RELEASED. Caesarean section. Surgeon tying the umbilical cord of a newborn baby to prevent bleeding when the cord is cut. The remainder of the cord will drop off within 7-10 days. The white substance on the baby's skin (right) is known as vernix, which lubricates the passage through the birth canal in vaginal deliveries. This baby has just been delivered by Caesarean section, where it was delivered through an incision made in its mother's abdomen and uterus. This procedure is performed when it is difficult or dangerous to deliver the baby in the normal way. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
