Dental implant. Light micrograph of a cross- section through a titanium metal dental implant. Implants are used to support false teeth (dental prostheses) where teeth have died and been removed. First the implant's base, or post (partly shown at centre and lower right), is surgically embedded into a hole drilled in the jawbone. The outside of the post is insfluffed upins so that new bone will grow into it to provide a strong base for the false tooth. The attachment (around post) is placed onto this post using a screw (yellow, at top right). Finally the false tooth will be cemented to this attachment. Interference contrast. Magnification: x15 at 5x7cm size.
