An artificial knee joint, as used in replacement surgery, seen fitted to human bone samples. Replacement of the knee joint may be necessary in a variety of conditions, most commonly in acute rheumatoid arthritis. The replacement, made in plastic, consists of new contact surfaces, an artificial cartillage between the faces and artificial tendons to limit flexion of the joint and to prevent sideways movement.
