Keyhole heart surgery. Image 1 of 2. Surgeon assessing a patient's coronary blood vessels using a miniature camera (endoscope), a procedure known as an angiography. This surgeon is using a biplane digital flatpanel system, where two images from different angles are captured and transmitted to the video monitors (seen behind the surgeon here), producing a better quality picture. If any vessels are found to be abnormally narrow, the surgeon may then perform an angioplasty, where a stent (wire mesh) is inserted into the narrowed vessel to widen it and reestablish normal blood flow. See M560/605-606 for a series of images showing keyhole heart surgery.
