Liver cirrhosis. Light micrograph of a section through liver tissue showing cirrhosis. This is a condition where the liver responds to the injury or death of some of its cells by producing interlacing strands (septa) of fibrous scar tissue (red-brown) between the active liver lobules (pink). This is an advanced state of cirrhosis. The liver is an organ that metabolises chemicals, storing some and excreting others. Cirrhosis is often a response to the damage caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. Magnification: x330 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
