Sir Joseph Hooker (1817-1911), English botanist, aged 34. Educated in medicine at Glasgow, Hooker served as Assistant Surgeon and Naturalist on Ross' Antarctic expedition of 1839-43. He then travelled widely, visiting India, Palestine and the United States. He published many books from his observations of indigenous plants, the greatest being Flora of British India (1872-97). Later he succeeded his father, Sir William Hooker, as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. He also joined Bentham in producing the immense Genera Plantarum, a seven-volume work on the classification of plants. He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1873.
