Macau peninsula, satellite image. Macau is a former Portuguese Overseas Province that reverted to Chinese sovereignty in 1999. Macua is in south east China on the South China Sea. Most of the city is built on reclaimed land. Macau has no arable land, pastures, forests or woodland. Its main industries are textiles, tourism and gambling. The city's container port is at left. Part of mainland China can be seen at upper left. At bottom left is the Macau Sky Tower, which is 338 metres tall, and was opened in December 2001.
