Catkins on a Silver Birch (Betula pendula). The large, male catkins are hanging below the branch, while the small, female catkins are on top. Catkins consist of many tiny petal-less flowers clustered around an axial stem. The male catkins release millions of pollen grains, which are carried on the wind to pollinate the female catkins.
