Pokeweed flower spike (Phytolacca americana). This plant contains toxins which are poisonous to mammals. It is used in herbal medicine to treat illnesses associated with a compromised immune system. The fruits are eaten by birds, which are not affected by the toxins. They also yield a dye which was once used by native Americans.
