Elephant hawk moth caterpillar (Deilephila elpenor) feeding on a leaf. This mainly nocturnal caterpillar is found throughout Europe, parts of Asia and the north-west coast of Africa. It has two large eye spots (black, white and brown) on its thorax to deter predators. It feeds on the leaves of willowherb, bedstraw and fuchsia plants and grows up to 9 centimetres in length.
