Northern lights (aurora borealis) faintly visible over Vestrahorn mountain in Iceland. The northern lights are a coloured display of light occasionally visible in the night sky, usually only at high latitudes. This occurs when charged and energetic particles from the Sun (solar wind) are drawn by Earths magnetic field to the polar regions. Hundreds of kilometres up, they collide with gas molecules and atoms, causing them to emit light.
