Trajan's Column, a monument that was erected in 106-113 ce by the Roman emperor Trajan and survives intact in the ruins of Trajan's Forum in Rome. The marble helical column measures 125 feet (38 metres) high together with the pedestal, or base, which contains a chamber that served as Trajan's tomb. The column was designed to be 'read' by walking around a ramped structure which no longer exists. In this scene Trajan is on the left being presented with battle standards by auxillaries following victories in the Dacian wars 101-102 and 105-106 CE. He appears in this scene in his character of Pontifex Maximus. Cast at the V&A.
