This Way Up. - This picture of the XFV-1, ready to take off straight up, was released recently by the U.S. Navy. It is designed to fly from the smallest ships, and land vertically. It's two powerful turbines are aided by rockets. The pilots seat rotates as the plane's angle changes. Flying speed is 700 miles an hour. The first plane completed, Now under test, is Temporarily Equipped with conventional landing gear for normal take-off and landing until vertical flight abilities have been thoroughly checked.
