Transmission electron micrograph of an osteocyte, which is a mature, nondividing bone cell. Osteocytes are actually osteoblasts that are responsible for bone formation and eventually become embedded in the bone matrix. A number of long tunnels can be seen (in red) called canaliculi. The osteocytes use these tunnels to interconnect and exchange gasses and nutrients within the bone.
