Mr Lewis Douglas, United States ambassador to Great Britain, paid his first visit to a British coalmine today (Monday) when he went with Lord Hyndley, chairman of the National coal board, to Denaby Main Colliery, South Yorks, one of the oldest pits in the country. As the Stars & Stripes and the union Jack flew from the pithead, Mr Douglas wearing blue overalls and a minor safety helmet went down to the coalface. 19 May 1947
