Bua; Tana Toraja; Indonesia; skulls in burial cave. On the island of Sulawesi. The skulls are in a cave which traditionally served as a cemetery for the town of Bua; which is near Rantepao. In Torajan culture; grave sites are considered sacred; and might be used for up to 30 generation. They are called Banua Tang Merambu; or 鈥楬ouse without fire; smoke; or kitchen.' These skulls can be seen to be placed on a slat of wood. This is done to elevate them above the ground; which is often quite moist due to the humidity within the cave. Photo 2013.
