Otto Frisch (1904-1979), Austrian-British physicist. Frisch gained his PhD from the University of Vienna in 1926. He moved to Germany to carry out research but in 1933 he was forced to leave due to Hitler's anti-Jewish laws. Frisch eventually settled in England in 1939. The same year, Frisch visited his aunt, Lise Meitner, and heard of Hahn's experiments on neutron bombardment of uranium. Frisch named the process 'nuclear fission' and soon realised the power of the chain reaction possible with Uranium-235. During 1943-45 Frisch worked on the Manhattan Project in New Mexico. He returned to England and went on to take the Jackson Chair in Physics at Cambridge University from 1947 until his death.
